That incredible, remote Canadian island
Savary is the name, and you'll want to go there next year
Last week I told you about our photo journey to a less traveled, more picturesque area of Canada’s British Columbia called the Sunshine Coast, but I saved the best for the last.
The highlight of the journey, which I want to tell you all about today, was boarding a water taxi to a remote, magical little island called Savary, which is home to about 100 people year-round.
Consider this: there’s no mail service, no Amazon.com deliveries, no mayor, no visible police force, little to no retail (except for a small general store) one restaurant (only open in the summer) and a seasonal bike shop.
But boy did we have fun!
The video above will show you all about why we love Savary, but my wife Ruth did a wonderful job exploring Savary in words, in her RuthTalksFood newsletter. So I cede the floor to Ruth—please give it a read!

More on the iPhone 14 Pro
I gave you my first impressions about using the new iPhone in the last edition, and took it to San Francisco this weekend, where I put it to more use, and now have two new conclusions.
Action Mode still stinks on foot, but it sure looks great on a cable car. Let me explain:
Action Mode promises smoother, less jerky video, but if you’re walking with the camera, you won’t see much improvement, if any. Get some wheels behind you though, and now we’re talking.
I love these shots I picked up from the cable car, handheld, as we zipped around San Francisco. You’ll see a lighting difference in the two clips here. The one below was shot later in the day, and Apple warned me I needed more light. Still, I love the show anyway, as you’ll see when two cable cars get very close together going up the hill.
From Chinatown
I’ve long said that San Francisco’s Chinatown is easily the most colorful, most stunning photo spot in the city. And it sure didn’t disappoint this weekend!
We had a great turn-out for Saturday’s photowalk event. Thanks again to the attendees, Flipboard for sponsoring and Chinatown for being amazing!
Check out the (incredible, fantastic, astounding) photos the group put together in the Flipboard magazine from our Chinatown event!
Next events:
—Manhattan Beach, with special guest, City Council candidate Amy Howorth, 9/29.
—San Francisco’s North Beach, 10/6.
Thanks for taking the time to read, watch and listen. And don’t forget to subscribe to Ruth’s newsletter! If you do, you’ll make her day!
Have a great week everyone!

That incredible, remote Canadian island
Mmmm. Beautiful. I once went on a 3 day sailing trip in Puget Sound. Just 8 of us on a sailboat. We anchored on small, uninhabited islands at night. I remember how incredible the stars were. It was right at summer solstice so the light on the northern horizon never completely disappeared. I’d love to do that again now that I have more appreciation for it. My friends who live in pender harbor have a 40+ year old wooden boat. They spend a month every summer among those islands. Heaven.
