I’ve said it every year, and Mother Nature just reiterated the point again. Yes indeed, November is the best month for sunsets, from here to Timbuktu.
And the great thing about the sunset show isn’t just watching the sun fall, but the way the clouds and colors form afterwards. Don’t be in a rush to leave, because it generally gets better for ten to fifteen minutes after Sol waves goodbye.
All the photos here were taken on an iPhone 13 Pro Max. They were edited (slightly) in Adobe Lightroom on the computer. Lightroom also has a terrific free smartphone app that’s highly recommended. The video below was done on an iPhone 12 Pro Max.
I pulled these shots to show the sunset progression on the magic night of 11/22/21. It started off around 4:30 incredibly in Manhattan Beach with that big blue sky and the dramatic clouds, then got better with a little sun, and then, after 5, the capper. The Manhattan Beach Aquarium is lit up right now like a Christmas tree, and with the lights turned on against the sunset, well, who can resist that?
Especially when you also get a low tide, and the reflection of the tree and holiday lights in the water?

Why are the sunsets so incredible this time of year? (Including Oklahoma and Texas!)
In a word: because the earth moves closer to the sun in the winter. Per KCRW: “The beautiful colors from a sunset are caused by the atmosphere. As the sun gets lower and lower in the sky, its light passes through more and more air layers—compared to noontime, when the sun is directly overhead. And those layers are filled with dust and water particles. This causes the sun’s light to bend as if through a prism, scattering the blue light in favor of reds, oranges, and purples.”
Sunset in Los Angeles will be at 4:46 p.m. on Tuesday, with 4:45 on Turkey Day and 4:44 on Saturday. If you’re outside of #SoCal, please check the website Time and Date for timetables in your city. And by all means get out there!

Who needs Black Friday and spending money on presents when you’ve got the best free light show in the sky?
Or, as my sunset pal Evelyn Schmitt said on Facebook: “You must come down to the water's edge to experience the amazing changes in color and light.”
Sidewalks and fields are good too!
